Judge McCaig... the man.

In my practice, I called myself a “Country Lawyer” because I lived and worked in Small Town, Texas. I have served in positions of leadership and trust in and out of the military, in the State Bar organization, in my community and in my church, gaining the experience and knowledge that I bring to the judicial table.

I grew up in Waller, a small town 40 miles northwest of downtown Houston, learning about life and people from my upbringing there. I attended Waller High School and Sam Houston State University, graduating from there in 1972 with a Bachelor of Science Degree and a commission in the United States Army. After a brief stint in the Army, I attended South Texas College of Law in Houston, graduating in 1978. After practicing law for two years I returned to the Army for almost seven years. Until my appointment to the bench in October 2007, I practiced law in Waller since 1987.

Our family attends Waller Baptist Church where I serve as a deacon, Director of Technical Productions, and serve on various committees. I served four years on the Waller ISD School Board. Over the years I’ve been active in the Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, Rotary Club, County Fair Association, FFA and other youth-oriented organizations.

I served as an assistant district attorney and special prosecutor in Waller County taking on several highly publicized cases of fraud, financial wrongdoing, voter misconduct and theft in a public institution. My general law practice included commercial litigation, personal injury, real estate and property law, business law, elder law and mediation. I served a three-year term as a director of the General Practice, Small Firm and Solo Practice Section of the State Bar of Texas.

I have tried many civil and criminal cases over the years, and I am qualified as a mediator under the provisions of the Texas Civil Practice & Remedies Code.

In my private life, I manage McCaig Family Limited Partnership, which includes a small cow-calf operation and property holdings.  I am a member of Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association.

In my Christian faith, I endeavor to live my life according to the teachings of Jesus Christ. I am not perfect in that respect and I do not hold others to a standard of perfection in their walk either. We all strive to live a good life, and a life that will be pleasing to our Lord.

I strive to never enforce my religious views on others. In my judicial duties, I am bound to uphold the law, to recognize the rights of all citizens, to make rulings on the facts and the law. I am not, nor do I hold myself out to be, a religious tribunal.

I was very fortunate to be raised in a Christian home. My late father lived a Christian life and set the example in our home by going to church with us. My mother, Nina McCaig, is a strong Christian woman, truly a Proverbs 31 woman, and she went to church with us as well. My three sisters are Christians.

I believe that Jesus Christ is the risen Son of God. I believe that He was born a virgin birth, lived on this earth as a man, died on a cross, was resurrected to new life on the third day, and continues to live today.  I believe in the inerrant truth of the Bible as the Word of God.  By denomination I am a Southern Baptist.

I believe that all persons, regardless of denomination, who call on the name of the Lord Jesus to be their personal savior are saved and have attained eternal life. They will live in Heaven in eternity, with me, my wife, and my children who are also Christians, and with all brothers and sisters in Christ. In Heaven there will be no regard to gender, race, social position, denomination or nationality.

I’ve taught numerous Bible Studies in my home church, Waller Baptist Church, and enjoy every opportunity to speak on those subjects.  One of my favorite ministry opportunities is playing the drum set in our church Praise & Worship band.  We have no name, but the instrumental and vocal members of the band are extremely talented.
